The search for love through the internet

There is a lot to be said about websites that (supposedly) find partners for us, but for the moment I will limit this article to reproducing the findings of Match.com surveys carried out with the help of some (small amount?) of its users in 2006.

In any kind of relationship it is wise to listen to the mind as well as the heart, or the heart as well as the mind. The same is true in many things. Reading any kind of survey research results it is necessary to keep in mind certain questions, such as:

  • who is carrying out the survey, and why
  • are they likely to be impartial
  • do they have an invested interest in the result
  • who are being surveyed
  • is the amount of people surveyed sufficient to give a fair and broad view
  • does the survey portray a minority or majority
  • are they able to show both sides of a coin
  • are they able to show the full picture, or truth
  • and many more such questions

It would seem advisable to keep an open mind when reading results of any survey, no matter who publishes it, or for what purpose.

Below are the results of surveys that the Internet Dating organisation Match.com has published on its website.
